Kyungsoo Lee

All of my paintings are inspired by my observations of the natural world.

Every day I am startled by learning something new about the plants, flowers and animals that I encounter. I am inspired by the peace and tranquility of the natural world. This peace, tranquility and optimism is what I hope to transmit to those who observe my paintings.

Though I take my inspiration from nature, I have no interest is making pictures of things, but wish to distill the essence and the emotional content of the thing.

I never paint directly from nature or from a model or photo. The paintings come from a place deeper than conscious memory, they are emotional connection to nature.

I enjoy big canvases, when the painting gestures become a sort of dance and while the music lays, my painting is a process of discovery, I don’t know where they are going until they arrive, often surprising even me.

I have been painting since I was a very small child. I have always gotten great pleasure from the colors, color combinations, line and forms as they grow on my canvas. When someone else enjoys what I have created, this multiplies my pleasure immensely. Then someone enjoys my paintings I feel that they are entering my paintings and touching me.
